What is mangosteen?

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), known as the “Queen of Tropical Fruits,” is considered to be one of the best tasting fruits in the world. This rare fruit, when ripe, is about the size of a mandarin orange, has a juicy white flesh and is encased in a thick reddish-purple rind. The fruit itself is sweet with a hint of acidity, often described as having a deep grape-strawberry like flavor that melts in the mouth. Where is mangosteen originally from?

Mangosteen’s exact place of origin is unknown; however, it is native to both Malaysia and Indonesia.

Where is mangosteen currently being cultivated?

Mangosteen cultivation is currently limited to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, the Philippines and other warm, tropical countries. It has remained primarily in Southeast Asia partly due to its strict climatic requirements and the fact that the fruit, although encased in a thick rind, remains edible for only a short period of time. In addition to that, mangosteen seeds are difficult to plant because they quickly lose their viability. Consequently, the number of trees that get successfully cultivated every year is very low. There have been attempts to cultivate mangosteen in Hawaii, however, the tree has not become well acclimated and is somewhat limited there.

Does mangosteen fruit grow on a tree or a bush?

Mangosteen fruit grows on one of the slowest growing and longest living tropical trees. Mangosteen trees thrive in ultra-tropical climates with high atmospheric humidity. They have a high straight trunk and symmetrically arranged branches which form the shape of a pyramid at the top. The leaves on the tree are dark green and shiny. A seedling tree usually grows about 10-15 years before it yields fruit.

Once a tree has matured, when is the fruit harvested?

When the fruit has a color change from green to reddish-pink, it is ready to be picked. Although the mangosteen has a fairly thick rind, it needs to be handled carefully to prevent it from becoming damaged. After it has been harvested and the color changes to a dark violet, it is ready to be eaten.

How often is mangosteen fruit harvested and how many fruits does one tree produce?

Mangosteen fruit gets harvested from a mature tree twice a year. The number of fruit can vary per tree. Mature trees can yield anywhere from 400 – 900 fruit.

Is mangosteen used for anything other than partaking in the enjoyment of it as a fresh fruit?
